Five years after the last misadventure, life goes on. Time passes by for Alice and for the Wonderland heroes. As life tends to go, everyone has to grow up and make sacrifices in order to obtain a successful and thriving future. For Alice, that meant succumbing to her mother’s wishes, by wedding Hamish and his money. For all intents and purposes, the marriage was just that. Alice gained her own money and land through his name, and Hamish was able to rise up and take over the company Alice’s dad used to run. It’s not the worst thing Alice could endure, but it’s not the best of all scenarios, either. Not even a year after their unity, Hamish dove straight into the work, and has steadily climbed the ranks since. Where he used to be present in he and Alice’s lavish home for an equal amount as she, the company keeps him away more often than not anymore. The more power he has, the more he’s away. The more he’s away, the more idle time Alice has, and the more restless she gets. Not even her pastime of collecting and actively seeking out antique and/or rare items keeps Alice distracted all hours a day.
Meanwhile, in Wonderland, without Alice’s active presence in fending off all of the Red Queen’s advances to claim Wonderland as her own cynical place, things get to be too hard for the crew to keep on. Not even the White Queen can manage to stop the Red Queen in her path to power. It’s for this very reason that the creatures and beings of Wonderland know that they have to leave and look for life elsewhere. If Alice could tumble down the rabbit hole and find her own place in Wonderland, surely they can figuratively climb right up that rabbit hole and find their place in Alice’s world, right? White Rabbit did it, so he can do it again with a little company. It's easier said than done, of course. No one entrance or exit into the world of whimsical beings is secure or straightforward. Nobody is guaranteed to even surface together, and while White Rabbit has told them that Alice’s world isn’t like theirs, it's not like they listen.
Just like people have to face realities and grow up, sometimes fate has a funny way of making things happen for a reason. Just when Alice is growing weary and bored with her life, the Wonderland crew are thrown into her world, and she’s got the means and capabilities to house the ones that find her. There’s room in the mansion she and Hamish share, anyway. A mansion for two people? Hamish and Alice clearly have no plans to start a family anytime soon, so it seems fitting that she offer her hand to past time friends like Cheshire, White Queen, Hatter, Dormouse, White Rabbit, and March Hare to help them find their way.
Up the rabbit hole, through the looking glass, and all out appearing in the nooks and crannies of the human world, some will find their way to Alice, someone will wind up directly at Alice’s feet, and some will be left to figure out things on their own. It’s only a matter of time before the Red Queen realizes she’s been abandoned, though. What’ll happen if she finds her own way out of the deserted Wonderland? What happens when Alice finds she enjoys spending time with a certain friend from her past over her supposed husband, and he speaks up about his concerns for it and their full mansion? He’s always gone, anyway, right? Shouldn’t be that hard to keep a secret…
Like everything now, like her sucking it up and enduring and the Wonderland friends seeking some semblance of life “up the rabbit hole”...it’s easier said than done.
