PAST:
Set during the Han dynasty, Fa Mulan was a young woman who loved her family, more than anything. With a spirit like a dragon; fierce and unbound, Mulan would do anything to protect her ailing father, even if that means impersonating a male and joining an army in his place. Li Shang, since a child, wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. To lead one of China’s most powerful Armies, and protect the wall that surrounds their country. He gets his chance when he is told he would have to train an army of misfits, men who stepped up when they were called into duty. That is where Mulan and Shang’s paths crossed.
Going by the name of Ping, Mulan tries her best to fit in and go unnoticed. As days turn into weeks, and weeks into months, no one has noticed a woman is among them and when the group is called out to scout the borders for Hans, a group of mercenaries hell bent on causing chaos in China and dethroning the emperor, they are attacked. It is Mulan (Ping) who saves Shang life and after the incident, the two become friends. Over time, Shang and Ping (Mulan) grew close and soon, Shang finds myself attracted to a man. Wanting to hide his feeling because they are forbidden and taboo, Shang tries to see Ping as just a friend, ignoring the increase attracting to him. When he goes in search of Ping, he found him, undressing, revealing the woman she truly was. Startled by this realization, Shang makes a noise, causing Mulan (Ping) to notice Shang. While Shang was fighting his feelings, Mulan, was as well. Afraid to act on them in fear Shang would find out the truth and have her arrested. But, Shang doesn’t.
He feels relief to learn that he was attracted to a woman and not the man he thought Mulan to be, and that is when they start their secret love affair. Secret meetings under the moonlight, hidden letters, and stolen kisses. Shang promises Mulan that he would find a way for them to be together without anyone learning her secret. However, in the middle of the night, their camp is attacked, throwing their world in chaos.
When Mulan and Shang are separated during a fight, he never imagined that the woman he loved would lose her life protecting the other soldiers. Shattered and heartbroken, Shang uses his sword to take out the anger and pain he feels daily. However, nothing could release the sorrow he felt and only a month after losing the love of his life, Shang tragically dies, vowing to find Mulan in the next life.
PRESENT: 2016
As a college student, Shang lost his mother as she was giving birth to him and his father to an “accident”. Moving from China, where his father’s business was located, to South Korea to live with an aunt until he was old enough to live alone, Shang felt drawn to something, to someone. A feeling he’s never been able to understand. His aunt, who believes in reincarnations, tells Shang that perhaps his soul his reaching out, searching for something/one. Never being one to believe in fate, Shang always brushed her words away, that is, until he begins to dream of a girls whose face he’s never been able to see.
Mulan was born into a loving family, reincarnated in South Korea. Her father, mother, and grandmother were always an integral part of her life. Although her father didn’t agree with her path into art or her tomboyish ways, she knew he loved her dearly. Her family friend, Khan, was also a staple in her home ever since her father took him under his wing for business. Although large and stoic, he always got along well with the family. Mulan grew up close to her older, comedian cousin Mushu. The three of them were an interesting trio, but they were nearly inseparable and even attend the same college when they are older. Being a free spirit, Mulan was an artist who painted the world as she saw it, a Kaleidoscope of color. Each painting, sketch, or drawing seemed to depict a place, a person, and after showing her grandmother, she learns that it’s trying to lead her to someone. Before Mulan could begin to understand what her subconscious is trying to say to her, she returns home to find their parents brutally murdered.
The police tells her that it’s no random act of violence, that the crime fits the execution style of a gang called the Hans. Originating from Japan, this gang expanded their empire, terrorizing and developing industry from China to Japan to Taiwan, lead by Shan Yu. Angry and hell bent on revenge, Mulan starts the journey to find out why her parents were killed and to search for Shan Yu and his gang that seem to be merely nothing but shadows. The ever protective Khan and the loyal Mushu join her on the endeavor.
Along the way, Mulan has a run in with the brothers Ling, Chien-Po, and Yao who are after the same mysterious Han gang as she. It seems that fate has a funny way of uniting people, especially lovers. As children, Shang and Mulan’s path have crossed, but they didn’t speak. Only a sideways glance while they were in a park with their respective families. Teenagers, at an art exhibit where Mulan entered a painting and Shang purchased. Young adults, chasing after the same ghost that ruined their families. Upon meeting on a stormy night, Mulan and Shang learn that the faceless ghost in their Dreams and Painting weren’t created out of distress or the need to release one's mind creatively, but memories of another life, another love story turn completely wrong.
In this life, with the help of Ling, Chien Po, Yao, and Mushu, will Mulan and Shang be able to face the demons who tore them apart so many centuries ago? Will Khan grow over his skepticism of Shang and his intentions? Mushu, who has just met Crickee in college (class/club/somewhere on campus), is now torn. What if seeking retribution for Mulan puts himself, and his new love interest, in danger? What happens when Crickee is put directly in the line of fire? Will they be able to save everyone? And will they became to defeat killers who tore their families apart or is the past destined to repeat itself?
