The Little's and the Hood's were both part of a ranching community in Sherwood, Colorado and were as close as two families can be and their children were no exception. Joanna Little and Robin Hood were inseparable from the day Jo was born, lifelong best friends as their mothers had been. The whole town thought they'd end up married, but even through highschool, things had never got romantic with them. That is until senior prom when a drunken Jo throws herself at Rob only to be rebuffed, shattering her self confidence.
That's when everything changed.
With graduation around the corner, Jo changes her college plans and decides to attend far away UCLA rather than the nearby University of Denver where Rob has enrolled. It's a choice that throws everyone for a loop, leaving Rob feeling abandoned with no explanation as to why.
Years pass. And while their parents try over and over again to fix things between them, the rift remains. But one Christmas, Jo ends up back in Sherwood, duped by her own father into believing that Rob will be spending Christmas in the dorms. Until, of course he shows up at the annual Little Christmas party with his on again off again highschool sweetheart, Marian.
In an effort to avoid confrontation and an awkward evening, they both do their best to bury the hatchet and though it's clear things will probably never go back to the way they were, Jo stops avoiding trips home.
A few more years pass when Jo receives an invitation to Rob and Marion's wedding followed by a call from Rob asking her to be one of his groomsmen (or groomswoman as the case may be). Their friendship is almost back on track by the time Jo comes home for the wedding and she and Rob fall into their once familiar rhythm. But their delicate balance is once again upset when, the night before the wedding, Rob innocently confesses that reason he didn't sleep with Jo on prom night was because he thought she deserved so much more than to drunkenly lose her virginity and not, in fact, that he hadn't been interested in her.
The fight that ensues between them over how different things could have been if he'd only clarified things back then heats to a boiling point and finds them following through with what never happened on prom night. Nothing has ever felt so right. All their missing pieces fall back into place. There would be no wedding in the morning... and they would finally have their chance.
But that fragile self confidence Jo has lived with since high school has made her her own worst enemy. In the early hours of the morning, Marian drops by the cabin to deliver the wedding bands, left behind by one of the other groomsmen. She finds Jo drinking coffee on the front porch alone and admits that she has been jealous of Jo her whole life. The pedestal Rob put Jo up on was so high she never thought she could reach it. Marian confesses that she was worried about Jo coming back for the wedding, but that she was wrong to worry and thanks Jo for being such a good friend to Rob before she heads back to her parent's house to get ready. Jo can barely breathe with the weight of her guilt. She was a terrible person. Rob deserved so much better than her.... he deserved someone like Marian.
When he wakes up, Rob finds Jo gone once again with no explanation. Maybe it had all been a mistake... reuniting, inviting her there. His own guilt crushing down on him, he confesses his deeds to Marian. But Marian knows the hold Jo has always had on him and forgives him almost instantly, settling all the blame for his cheating on Jo. The wedding goes on as planned, with Rob's sense of honor weighing over him and Marian willing to be second choice rather than no ones choice at all.
Years continue to pass and Jo vows never to set foot in Sherwood again. But then one day, Jo gets a phone call from Marian. Rob's father has passed. "He needs you." Marian says.
Reluctantly, Jo goes back to Sherwood one last time...
