One name among youtube creators is widely known. Whether you’ve followed the community from the start or you’re new to the scene, everyone knows who Shane Dawson is and the world is widely familiar with his strokes of genius and his flair for dramatizing the content he puts out. To the creators themselves, Shane Dawson is one the original vloggers and tends to be widely respected; he is well liked between various cliques and gives just about anyone a chance.
That’s how all this was even able to be put together.
“Camp Charisma” is the latest idea to set fire to the internet and rack in all the views. Creatively, it’s the epic collab to end all collabs. Think every summer camp ever with cabins and the woods. Think hiking, campfires and a lake. It has all that and more. Nestled in the backcountry of the Colorado Rockies, Camp Charisma isn’t just dusty trails and scenic views. It couldn’t be. Not with the boosie and the younger crowd that make up creators today. In some sense, Camp Charisma has attributes that make this all seem like a ‘glamping’ mixed with group therapy sessions and a knock off of MTV’s The Challenge. And that’s exactly what it is-- or that’s what Shane Dawson meant for it to be.
Upon entering the camp, the creators have signed a waiver that filming can and may be occuring at any time. After all, if this is Shane’s show, then there has got to be some sort of ‘Big Brother’ filming going on because otherwise, would anything be candid? The creators themselves are allowed to produce their own content, too, so long as Shane and Camp Charisma are tagged when the videos are uploaded. The camp does have wifi, but using it is limited to work and only work. The same can be said for cell phones.
Squads and teams share cabins. Shane doesn’t split any one group up, unless the group is larger and then it may be split into two or three smaller groups (Team 10, Vlog Squad). Smaller creators without affiliations are grouped together based off similarities (beauty gurus, DIYers, etc). Cabins generally have two or three bedroom areas and small living spaces. Each cabin has indoor plumbing/electricity (thank goodness!) and its own kitchenette, but there is a central bathhouse meant for showering. This bathhouse is at a walking distance from all cabins. Dinner is meant to be a group event, as well, and is held at a central lodging hall. Breakfast is available, but optional. Supplies for the cabin and groceries are attainable once a week or upon emergency demand, given the supply or grocery. There isn’t any maid or room service.
Camp Charisma’s staff is specifically employed and managed by Shane Dawson himself. This would include some of the OG creators/celebrity guests that Shane might introduce (examples: Jenna Marbles, various MTV personalities or reality stars that know certain creators).
All in all, it’s a commitment and sacrifices will have to be made for what seems like an endless summer, but it’ll be worth it. The payout and the popularity gained from this sort of event is bound to be astronomical. That’s why so many turn out. That’s why so many squads back-burner the beef and tell themselves they’ll endure what they must to get through several months of Youtube’s own ‘reality television’ show.
But will they? Will the submission to all that they’ve consented be worth the money in the end? Camping is about coming together, competition, and creating memories. Time can only tell if the pros will outweigh the cons, and everybody knows Shane is infamous for plot twists. When the twist finally comes and then a camper goes missing, will the creators take it seriously or is something more malevolent afoot?
